I may be slightly addicted to Goodreads...

Part of the reason is  my mathematical side. Having spent the vast proportion of my life so far undertaking numerical pursuits (i.e. Maths degree followed by Accountancy career) I love anything that lets me count things. Goodreads is brilliant for this. Set a reading target. Set a list of 'Want to Read' books. Monitor against the targets! Wow - who knew reading could be so statistical!? (Although it can be slightly stressful to be told you are behind target - thought reading was meant to be fun!!)

I currently seem unable to read just one book at a time - and have a number on the go at once - all recorded in my trusty app.

You can find me on Goodreads here:-

                                  手机如何连接外国网络电视

The Community element is also something that is great - and reading the reviews (always after I have read the book myself) is very interesting to see other perspectives.

I'm currently 30 books into my 100 target for 2016 but Goodreads tells me I am 1 behind schedule so until next time...

                                  Hi everyone!

Hope you've all survived the Monday back to work today - I have... just about.

While I am gathering submissions for the full length first issue of the magazine thought it would be fun to start publishing some daily flash fiction on the site.

If you have anything you have written (between 100 and 250 words) and you want me to promote and host on the site then please send in to the usual address tynetales@gmail.com

                                  Thanks

We all need to be open to learning how to become better writers.

This applies whether you are a newcomer to writing or someone who has been trying to be successful for years. I believe one of the main ways to do this is to keep up with some of the great blogs put out there by individuals who are already having that success.

I love to read a blog - especially when you find one that has been around a while - and you can read or listen to that individuals journey. Usually from where I am now - i.e. a beginner in this area - to becoming successful.

As well as launching this site as ultimately a magazine to showcase some of the great writing that is around I also want it to be a place where writers can come for resources. This is something I will be looking to develop over the next few months.

The recent past has found me delving into podcasts quite regularly and these are the top 3 that I have found that I would encourage others to check out!

                                  1 - Iain Broome
                                  http://www.iainbroome.com/#intro
I found this little gem on itunes recently - mainly through the podcast Write for Your Life - which had about 159 episodes. It's great to listen to Iain and a variety of guests speaking about a whole range of writing related topics - and has been great to help me get throygh my 2 hour commute each day! Iain is knowledgeable and some of the podcasts as well as being informative are very funny. I encourage you to give this a go.

                                  2 - The Creative Penn
                                  http://www.thecreativepenn.com
Joanna Penn is a published author of a number of novels and shares here a whole host of information that is extremely useful to new writers. She goes into a lot of detail around self-publishing and how to get that right - and is just a great example of someone being really successful through writing.

This is a great blog run by Pat Flynn. This is a bit of a strange one to include as really Pat's thing is about giving advice around building a passive income. However - the way he broke through was in writing a textbook for an exam in the US - and turning this into a revenue generating business. His story is really motivating to me - and I always find his blog and podcast informative and helpful.

Does anyone else have any great sites that they use?

Please remember that submissions for the first issue of the online magazine are open now. Either click on the Submit section of the website or email through to us at tynetales@gmail.com.

So you want to be a writer.

I have a niggling thought which has been pushing me for attention for a few years now – the thought that I would love to be a writer.
The idea of being a novelist is very appealing – and every time I start thinking about potential stories I feel so much more excited and energized than I ever do in my day job  – and although I don’t necessarily have any hopes of being able to quit my job and do this full time I think that it’s something that I really need to do for myself at some point – and what better time than now!
                                  手机怎么连接外国网络
Everything that I’ve read so far seems to suggest that there are a number of things that any aspiring writer should do:-
                                  • Read a lot – almost everyone agrees that in order to be able to write yourself you need to read widely – good or bad – anything you can get your hands on. I love reading – and spend a great deal of time doing this anyway – mainly sci-fi or graphic novels at the moment – so this should be no problem for me!
                                  • Network with Other Writers –  one of the best ways to understand and improve your writing seems to be to talk to others who are doing something similar. I’ve joined a few online groups and websites and hope to become an active member of these as time goes by – but part of the reason for this blog is also to ultimately meet other people in a similar position and to swap stories and techniques on trying to get some success through writing. Also hopefully to make some new friends and meet people that otherwise I wouldn’t.
                                  • Write – the way to improve is to write a lot – practice the craft and as with anything you will get better. Again this blog is one of my attempts to start writing more regularly – but I also plan to start writing some fiction (both short stories and a novel) and will keep this blog updated on how that goes!
                                  • Have fun – so this is mine. I don’t want to put any pressure on myself at the moment. I think that I want writing to become something I enjoy doing for myself and if it becomes a chore then that kind of defeats the object for me.
Ultimately I want to do something that I love, and eventually aim to free up more time to spend with my family without maybe working the 9 to 5.

Part of my journey is the launch of this magazine TyneTales - I am planning to publish either monthly or bi-monthly dependent on volume of quality submissions so please feel free to submit to me at:-

                                  Tynetales@gmail.com

Looking forward to the road ahead!

                                  Philip
